Being an authentic life strategist with a passion for human behaviors and personalities, I have been using CliftonStrengths® in analysing, researching and the development of my national teams, in conjunction with Simon Hurry, for the past 10 years. The results and positive impact on the individual and the overall team dynamic have far exceeded my expectations.

I have no association with Gallup; I utilise my vast detailed understanding of this process and its content to better align myself to one’s specific behaviours in enabling a 360 effective delivery of the client’s contractual coaching and mentoring requirements. [FITT16, which follows this in section 2, connects one’s CliftonStrengths® back to one’s personalities.]

[It is optional for Clients to incorporate CliftonStrengths® or BOTH CliftonStrengths® and FITT16 into their coaching and mentoring sessions. Situation dependent, it could be advisable but not always mandatory.]

I will discuss with you prior to commencing our Partnership Agreement Programme.

[N.B. -- The content has been developed through the fusion of various different disciplines and methods. If you have been trained by Gallup, you may even find that some of it contradicts what Gallup has published. The intention is not to undermine Gallup’s approach but merely to grow the science and application behind a talent-based approach. The non-Gallup information you are receiving has not been approved and is not sanctioned or endorsed by Gallup in any way. Opinions, views and interpretations of CliftonStrengths® are solely the beliefs of the Founder, Simon Hurry and are applied accordingly by me.]

1. CliftonStrengths®

CliftonStrengths® determines only potential, it is not a skill……….

Talents are INSTINCTS, not strengths…………

Engagement [behaviour] determines performance = happiness / reward.

Using CliftonStrengths® to Understand Behaviour

Through deep self-knowledge, one understands your natural drives, values, and patterns—seeing clearly where your strengths lift you and where your blind spots can trip you. This awareness transforms raw talent into disciplined, mature behaviour.

You stop reacting on-impulse and start choosing actions with intention, aligning who you are with the impact you want to have. In doing so, you stand taller, think clearer, and lead with the kind of presence that others trust and follow.

There are TWO main areas of focus:

YOU: Understanding what “normal” behaviour looks like for you is key to the authentic expression of who you are. More importantly, understanding what the healthy expression of this behaviour is, is critical for building deeper relationships with others.

OTHERS: Understanding how you perceive and react to other’s behaviour is equally important. This shapes the way you connect, communicate, and collaborate with people. It helps you recognize your own biases, triggers, and assumptions, so you can respond more thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. This awareness improves your relationships by fostering empathy and reducing misunderstandings.

What is a Signature Theme?

A Signature theme represents a cluster of naturally occurring behaviours. Each theme can be equated to having an instinct; an intuitive skill that is untaught and that when applied in a particular way, can confer an advantage.

This skill is so natural, it is hard for someone to understand why someone else does not have it. The remarkable thing about this skill is that when exercised, it leads to a deep sense of satisfaction [happiness]. It is this feeling that directs much of what people prefer to do and why they tend to ignore actions that are less satisfying. In acting on these instincts, behaviour is generated.

A person’s rank order describes which instincts are the strongest. The stronger the instinct, the more it will impact on a person’s behaviour.

No instinct behaves in isolation. The relationship between each instinct creates a person’s psychology. The acting out of this psychology creates a person’s personality.

The Domains are Key to Unlocking Behavioural Understanding.

The four domains are:

  • Relationship Building.
  • Influencing.
  • Strategic Thinking.
  • Executing.

This section introduces the key aspects that underpin each domain and why they are so important to understanding why people do what they do.

Each Signature theme is, in essence, a beautiful perspective on the world that makes us all richer.

While this perspective is so natural for the person with it, these rich perspectives represent lessons or principles for those of us without these instinctive ways of seeing the world.

We do not need to have the Signature theme dominant to learn the lesson.

  • I have often felt the 34 themes represent all we need to make the world an incredibly beautiful place that we can all thrive in. The trick is to get them at the right time, in the right order, and in the right way.

A] The Goal Driven Themes: [Executing and Influencing]

1] Executing themes remind us of the importance of following through and taking personal accountability for getting stuff done. Each theme also demonstrates what can tangibly be realised when one realises a goal.

Achiever®

If you are prepared to work hard and persevere, you can achieve anything you want to.

Arranger®

Find the right way something should be arranged, and you unlock optimal effectiveness.

Belief®

Do the right thing regardless of how you feel or think.

Consistency®

Doing the same thing over and over again in the same way ensures that a consistent result is always achieved.

Deliberative®

Focus on controlling what can go wrong, and it will go right.

Discipline®

Create and follow the exact steps towards a goal and your outcome will always be precise.

Focus®

When you are single-minded, you prevent distractions from taking you off course.

Responsibility®

When you do what you say you will do every time, people can depend on you.

Restorative®

Fix what is broken, and you do not need to start again.

2] Influencing themes remind us of the power of persuasion. They demonstrate what can happen when you seek to energise or persuade others rather than just accept a situation for what it is. You change the course of an outcome.

Activator®

Time is of the essence. Take too long and you can miss out.

Command®

Deal with a threat decisively. Make a decision.

Communication®

Share what you are experiencing. Tell people about what is happening. Do not keep things to yourself.

Competition®

Survival of the fittest. Say no more.

Maximizer®

Be more. Relentlessly pursue the best version of yourself.

Self-Assurance®

Back yourself. Test yourself. Know your limits.

Significance®

Make your actions count. Make a difference in the world. Leave a legacy.

Woo®

Be nice and welcoming. Make an effort to help people feel at ease with you.

B] The Thoughtful Themes: [Relationship Building and Strategic Thinking]

3] Relationship Building Themes remind us of the importance of noticing the individual and what can be accomplished when we trust each other. They show us how we should treat each other and care for one another resulting in the establishment of powerful community. They teach consideration, awareness, and cooperation.

Adaptability®

Let people be. Sometimes the best moments between people are this that just happens.

Connectedness®

We are all connected in some way. Your actions will impact others so take the whole into consideration in everything you do.

Developer®

Help someone believe in themselves by being there for them in their weak and difficult moments. Take time to encourage and support those who you feel need a shoulder to cry on or lean against.

Empathy®

Be considerate of the emotional burdens of others, especially on the way you behave. Do not add to it but rather seek to help support them or lessen the burdens in some way.

Harmony®

Seek balance in all you do. Resolve disagreement with a peaceful attitude. Volatile emotion can be damaging. Be prepared to find the middle ground.

Includer®

No one is more important than anyone else. See all people as equals and make an effort to ensure no-one feels left out. Do not judge others.

Individualization®

Take time to notice what motivates a person and why they do what they do. Treat people as they prefer to be treated rather than the way you would prefer to treat them.

Positivity®

Seek to celebrate all that is good about life and the people around you. Manifest a better reality through thankfulness while ridding yourself of all negativities.

Relator®

Be who you say you are. Authenticity builds trust. Only trust people who are authentic.

4] Strategic Thinking themes remind us of the importance of understanding the context of a situation before making a decision. These themes create understanding and meaning and therefore play an important role in informing actions.

Analytical®

Test assumptions, do not take information at face value. Interrogate it. Ensure that whatever data you use, that it has been validated and can be trusted.

Context®

Pay attention to the patterns of the past that tend to repeat themselves. Learn from this.

Futuristic®

Being able to visualise a future reality is a powerful way to create hope and to enable people to clearly articulate what they are working towards.

Ideation®

Be prepared to see links anywhere. Do not limit your thinking to just one way, keeping information separate from each other. New connections create new options and new realities.

Input®

Knowledge empowers choice. The more you know, the more you can do. When information is organised well, it empowers people to communicate and share what they know in a meaningful way.

Intellection®

It is never as simple as it may seem. Always seek a more comprehensive understanding through examining a subject from alternative perspectives.

Learner®

Creating a method allows other people to develop the skills they need to undertake an activity that they previously were not able to do. You should always be open to acquiring new skills; it will allow you to do many different things.

Strategic®

What is the shortest route to an outcome? Efficiency ensures that you never have to invest more resources in achieving an outcome than you have to. Always seek the most efficient way you can do something.

These 34 themes being Instincts are categorised into the 4 Domains that then transcends into 16 Styles, Approaches and Threads – Methods are derived and what Methods requiring change to align to the Environment and People are established.

Fit [personality] determines performance = happiness / reward.

Why understand who you are?

People have natural curiosity and desire to understand oneself and others. Knowing one’s personality can serve key purposes:

A. Self-Understanding:
  • Understanding one’s personality helps individuals make sense of their feelings, thoughts and behaviours. It provides insights into why one reacts to certain situations, how choices are made, and relationships develop.
B. Personal Growth & Development:
  • Knowing one’s personality traits and tendencies allows for targeted personal development, for areas of improvement, set realistic goals and becoming the best version of oneself.
C. Career Choices:
  • Personality assessments are regularly used in career counselling to match individuals to suitable professions. Some careers may align better to certain personalities and knowing this, can guide one’s career choices more effectively.
D. Decision Making:
  • Understanding one’s personality can influence decision-making processes. For example, some people may be more adventurous and others more risk adverse, knowing these tendencies can help making better decisions aligned to one’s values and preferences.
E. Interpersonal Relationships:
  • Awareness of one’s personality assists in understanding how one interacts with others. It fosters better communication, empathy, and collaboration in both personal and professional relationships.

Connecting your CliftonStrengths® results back to your personality.

Think of CliftonStrengths® as being a method of deconstructing your personality into its core, measurable components—specifically your natural talents.

CliftonStrengths® essentially shows which patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving are most dominant and influential for you, creating a powerful way to dissect and understand your functional wiring.

While the assessment shows your top talent in rank order, it does not deeply analyse how these talents interact dynamically within you or with others. It highlights WHAT your talents are but not necessarily on HOW these talents combine conflict and influence each other in complex ways over time.

The power of personality.

Connecting talents identified through CliftonStrengths® to a 16-type personality framework offers the following benefits:

  • Enriched Self-Understanding: While talents show WHAT you naturally do well, the 16-type system helps explain HOW and WHY you express those talents based on your cognitive preferences and worldview. Combined, they create a more complete picture of your unique self.
  • More Tailored Development: Knowing both your top talent and your personality type allows you to customize growth strategies that align not just with your abilities but also with how you process information, make decisions and interact socially.
  • Improved Team Collaboration: Mapping talents to personality types helps teams recognise not only individual strengths but also the underlying differences in how people approach work and relationships. This deepens empathy and improves role fit, communication and synergy.
  • Better Career and Role Fit: Combining talents and type insights guides more precise career choices by aligning what you excel at with environments and roles that suit your natural preferences, leading to higher satisfaction and success.
  • Insights into Talent Dynamics: Personality types shed light on how talents might interact or manifest under various mental and emotional filters, helping you understand potential challenges and opportunities in leveraging your strengths effectively.

In summary, connecting talents to a 16-type framework enriches your self-knowledge and practical application of your natural gifts within the broader context of your personality.

This is FITT16, a 16-type framework to help you achieve any or all of the above, without losing the value of knowing your talent map.

Signature themes, personality and shape:

The CliftonStrengths® assessment identifies and categorises 34 unique talents [themes] that one may possess. These talents are often considered as components or facets of an individual’s personality because they reflect specific ways in which individuals naturally think, feel and behave.

Furthermore, combinations of talents give rise to predictable behavioural traits. The order of themes and their particularly overall arrangement is significant in determining the traits that can be observed when evaluating how a person behaves.

The most popular approach to classifying these traits is the Five-Factor Model [FFM], a widely accepted framework in psychology for understanding and describing human personality. The FFM has influenced the development of most modern psychometrics.

FFM identifies 5 major traits:

  • Openness to Experience: This trait reflects the extent to which a person is open-minded, imaginative, and open to new ideas and experiences. Individuals high in openness tend to be curious, creative and willing to explore novel concepts whilst those low in openness may prefer routine and familiarity.
  • Conscientiousness: This refers to the degree of organization, responsibility and dependability in an individual. Conscientious individuals ate typically organized, reliable and goal orientated. Those low on conscientiousness may be more spontaneous and less focused on structure planning.
  • Extraversion: This describes the degree to which a person is outgoing, energetic and sociable. Extraverts tend to seek social interactions, enjoy being in the company of others and are generally more assertive. Introverts on the other hand may prefer solitude or smaller gatherings and may be more reserved.
  • Agreeableness: This reflects the level of kindness, cooperativeness and consideration for others. Individuals high on agreeableness are often compassionate, cooperative and empathetic. Those low on agreeableness may be more competitive or less concerned with the needs and feelings of others.
  • Neuroticism [Emotional Stability]: This refers to the tendency to experience negative emotions such as anxiety, moodiness and emotional instability. Individuals high in neuroticism [low in ES] may be more prone to stress and worry whilst those low in neuroticism [high in emotional stability] tend to be more even-tempered and resilient in the face of challenges.

These BIG FIVE traits are considered relatively stable over time and across different situations. The manifestation of these traits differs from each person to person giving rise to peoples differing behaviours.

These behaviours can be clustered to create different personality “types.”

The 16-types in FITT16 will assist you in understanding:

The general behaviour a person’s overall theme combination creates:

  • A quick reference to who they will likely enjoy building relationships with and who they find difficult.
  • Quick insights into their complex psychology that is the product of the signature theme combination.
  • Quick insight into the type of work that will interest them.
  • Quick insight into ways of working [WOW] with them will complement their overall theme combination and not just one theme.

If one uses these quick reference sheets and applies a person’s rank order and knowledge of individual themes to the mix, you will be able to “see” the person at a remarkable level of detail.
